N-Bromosuccinimide is a brominating and oxidizing agent widely used in organic chemistry for allylic and benzylic bromination. As a stable solid, NBS allows selective introduction of bromine atoms under mild conditions. It’s especially useful in free-radical reactions and in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. NBS also acts as a mild oxidizer in some oxidative cyclizations.
